Keisha is an 18-year-old African American high school student at Hazelwood High in Cincinnati. Although she is attractive and popular with the rest of her class, Keisha is also a serious student who aspires to become a doctor someday. At the novel’s beginning, she is processing the grief of losing her boyfriend to suicide. Keisha shuts herself down emotionally and shies away from dating for fear of being hurt again. This failure to deal with her feelings leaves her vulnerable to the charms of an older student-teacher who is unlike the teenage boys she knows. While Keisha has strong ties to her family and friends, she strays away from these stable bonds to pursue a romance that everyone else thinks is wrong.
Keisha is attracted to the sophistication of her secret boyfriend, Jonathan, and conceals her relationship from her parents. Because she is also struggling with transitioning from teenager to adult, she is flattered by someone who treats her as a grown woman. Although Keisha complains that her parents don’t grant her the freedom of an adult, she proves that she is far from ready to make adult decisions and accept the consequences of her actions. After Jonathan tries to rape her, Keisha shuts down ever further than before. It takes some time for her to deal with the devastating experience and rebound from it. By the novel’s end, she has learned a valuable lesson and matured while retaining her optimism about a brighter future for herself and her classmates.
Jonathan is the 23-year-old son of the Hazelwood High principal. He joins the faculty as an athletic coach while working toward a degree in education. Jonathan superficially appears to be every girl’s dream. He is handsome, charming, dresses well, and has traveled the world. In addition, he can discuss philosophy and art with Keisha, proving that his interest in her isn’t simply physical.
Unfortunately, Jonathan’s excellent qualities are all superficial. As Keisha’s friend Leon notes, he seems too perfect. Keisha fails to recognize that Jonathan’s attentions toward her are only an elaborate form of seduction. He could never make his mother love him, so he is determined to get attention from women through deceit and even rape. Jonathan has assaulted many women in the past but has never been caught. His encounter with Keisha is the beginning of the end for him. After she slashes his face, he relocates to Kentucky. When he tries raping another high school student, he is finally caught and sent to prison for 30 years.
Leon is a Hazelwood High senior and considered the class clown because he will do anything for a laugh. He also sings well and is a good dancer. Initially, Keisha dismisses him as an amusing fool until she learns that Leon has more depth than she realized. He has always had a crush on Keisha and keeps all her school pictures in his bedroom at home.
Aside from his school pranks, Leon also works at his father’s flower shop. He secretly sends Keisha a bouquet of roses and a butterfly necklace for Christmas. As he explains, he isn’t a creepy stalker. He simply admires Keisha. Leon proves his worth as a friend after Keisha is attacked by Jonathan. He protects her from the rude curiosity of fellow students once she returns to school and gives her the space she needs to heal. Ultimately, his patience is rewarded because he wins Keisha’s genuine regard.
Edna is a woman without a permanent home who lives on the streets of Cincinnati but refuses to feel sorry for herself. She is healthy, sturdy, and about 60 years old when she encounters Keisha delivering soup to a friend. While the girl feels pity for her, Edna points out that she has a warm place to stay on cold nights and knows which charities give out food when she needs it. She considers herself a free spirit who has no financial obligations.
After Keisha is attacked, Edna comes to the rescue and takes the girl indoors. Edna also offers some important advice. When Keisha feels that Jonathan has wrecked her life, Edna points out that nobody can touch her spirit. She then helps Keisha reunite with her parents. Edna asks nothing for herself because she feels she already has everything she needs in life.
